Chairperson of South Africa's Truth and Reconciliation Commission Archbishop Desmond Tutu greets Bishop Frank Retief in April 1996, when the commission heard evidence relating to the 1993 St James Church Massacre in Cape Town. The massacre, perpetrated in the build-up to South Africa s first democratic elections, claimed 11 lives and injured another 58 people. Retief told the commission he encountered bodies strewn about and shattered pews on arriving at the church minutes after the massacre.
