Chairperson of South Africa's Truth and Reconciliation Commission Archbishop Desmond Tutu met victims of apartheid era human rights violations in the Cape Town township of Gugulethu, in April 1996, days before the first public hearing of the Commission s Human Rights Violations Committee in East London. The meeting, which largely focused on the murder by police of the so-called Gugulethu Seven in 1986, was the last of several community engagements which preceded the Commission s formal public launch.
