Keyboard shortcuts can be used to navigate aspects of this site without a mouse or cursor.


When viewing a document, select or tab into the image viewer and use the following controls to manipulate the image.


  • Move up: w or [up arrow]
  • Move down: s or [down arrow]
  • Move left: a or [left arrow]
  • Move right: d or [right arrow]
  • Return to centre: 0
  • Zoom in: = or [shift] + w or [shift] + [up arrow]
  • Zoom out: - or [shift] + s or [shift] + [down arrow]
  • Rotate clockwise: r
  • Rotate counterclockwise: R
  • Flip horizontally: f

    Formative Life: Sub Fonds

    Tutu's early years from birth to childhood, schooling, post-school education as a teacher and the years he taught in schools. It also includes material of his family life while growing up.

    Childhood and Early Life (1931-1950)

    The period from Tutu's birth to the end of his schooling in 1950 including his illness and friendship with Father Trevor Huddleston and other mentors.

    Family Life

    Materials pertaining to Tutu's family while growing up until the time of his marriage to Nomalizo Leah Shenxane.

    Teacher Training (1951 - 1954)

    Tutu's training as a teacher at Bantu Normal College outside Pretoria.

    Material to populate this section of the archive is yet to be prepared for upload. Its absence is recorded in order to express the archive’s full structure.

    Teacher (1954-1957)

    Tutu's time of teaching at Madipane High in Krugersdorp, obtaining a BA Degree from UNISA, and teaching at Munsieville High School and his decision to leave teaching.
